Celebration Humidor

This humidor was designed and made by Martin Lane to commemorate the 150th anniversary (1849-1999) of the founding of Harrods Limited of Knightsbridge, London.

The humidor is made in bubinga and kevasingo, which is rotary cut bubinga chosen to show the decorative grain. The handles and inlay are in ebony. There is a clear lacquer finish except for the natural Belize cedar lining where the cigars are stored. The fittings are hallmarked sterling silver and silver plate.

There are three parts to this humidor. The central section has 10 Belize cedar dovetailed drawers visible behind two glass doors. The base of each drawer has been laser-etched to show a variety of cigar brand labels. The drawers contain moveable partitions to allow different sized cigars. There are 16 colour mounted Havana marques on the front of the drawers. The two lower drawers contain humitecs and digital hygrometer displays.

Above this set of drawers is a lift-up lid with a secret push button opener (the ebony button on the right-hand side). Opening the lid reveals a lining of gold shot silk with fine cut glass bead button backing and a hallmarked sterling silver ring guage guide and ruler for measuring Havana cigars. A pair of lighters and ashtrays, of matching design to the humidor, and two cutters, all mounted on ebony, are placed below the lid. Behind these is the hand-cut engraved inscription into hallmarked sterling silver which reads:

"Harrods Celebration Humidor. To commemorate Harrods 150th anniversary 1849-1999. Designed and made by Martin Lane Cabinet Maker to J. J. Fox Cigar Merchants"

The final section comprises a dovetailed drawer (opened secretly by pushing the central ebony button) to access further accessories and a second ashtray. The drawer sides are rippled sycamore with bubinga partitioning and black suede lining.

This piece was awarded a Guild Mark (number 286) from The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers. This award was for excellence in design, materials, craftsmanship and function.
